What We Do
theDataLock is a division of MassTechnical, Inc., a full service consulting and software development company. In addition to providing our remote backup service, we provide software development and system consulting services.
In reviewing you systems, we will help you answer the following questions:
- Is your data well organized? We typically find network clients have data mixed between local PC's and network drives. This makes it almost impossible reliably protect and backup data. Systems should be configured so that information is stored in consistent locations for reliable backup.
- Do you have redundant data on your system? At some clients we have found that as much as 25% of their hard drive data was duplicate information. It is not unusual for us to find whole folders that have been copied and forgotten, or large zip files of data that are no longer useful.
- Are your program directories backed up and do you have the original media and license keys for your programs?
- What older information on your system can be archived so that it does not take up room on daily backups? Some old information may not even be necessary to keep on your network - it can be archived to DVD disks in the event it will ever be needed.
The advantages of online backup to a typical business are enormous:
- All files are protected by state of the art encryption, only the customer can retrieve their files
- Completely automated off-site protection
- Fast online recovery of any version of any protected file
- Easy installation and setup
- Only an internet connection is required, eliminating the need for expensive backup equipment and media
- The backup server is monitored by highly skilled technicians whose only job is to make sure the backups are performed properly
This is how it works....
We operate an off-site storage facility at a tier-1 data center. At the facility, an account is maintained for each user. Each account is protected by a password known only to the user.
The electronic vault system is set up so that at a preset time, usually at night, the client's computer automatically wakes up and prepares its data for backup, it determines which files have been modified since the last backup, compresses them, and encrypts them for security. When the data is ready the computer uses its Internet connection to contact our Servers and transmit the data.
Our Servers verify and store the data. Data is mirrored daily to a second server at the data center, and weekly to an off-site facility.
